From Darkness to Light
How does one go from Darkness to Light? These indeed are trying times. Where everywhere you look doom and gloom reigns. As I write this I’ve just come across devastating news of someone passing away. Someone young and seemingly invincible. If it is all darkness it is here. What does darkness mean in times like these?
The Quote from Og Mandino
When I’ve been through some trying times, there was a quote from Og Mandino that gave me a new perspective. It went like this: I will love the light because it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.
Asatamo ma sadgamaya
And in times of trouble, Indic wisdom always comes up with the answers, the philosophy, the prayer, the plea. The Shanti Mantra comes from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. Here is are well-known words from the scriptures that most Indians know:
ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय ।
तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय ।
मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय ।
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
Om Asato Maa Sad-Gamaya |
Tamaso Maa Jyotir-Gamaya |
Mrtyor-Maa Amrtam Gamaya |
Om Shaantih Shaantih Shaantih ||
And here’s the meaning
1: Om, (O Lord) Keep me not in (the Phenomenal World of) Unreality, but make me go towards the Reality (of Eternal Self),
2: Keep me not in (the Ignorant State of) Darkness, but make me go towards the Light (of Spiritual Knowledge),
3: Keep me not in (the World of) Mortality, but make me go towards the World of Immortality (of Self-Realization),
4: Om, Peace, Peace, Peace.

From Darkness to Light
From ignorance to knowledge, from delusion to truth from mortality to immortality – may we find peace.
From despair to hope and from these trying times to better times… we can hope, we can pray and we can look at the stars as they continue shining in the darkness.
And in the final analysis, we hope we move forward in our spiritual journey in peace.
Om Shanti Shanti Shantih
