“A workshop with teens? You think they are going to talk to each other in person? They are only in the ‘prayer position’ with their phones!”
Right?
Wrong.
That was the general (proved unfair) comment. I had faith. But I also had doubts. What if they don’t want to build? What if they don’t want to share? What if? What if? What if?
And yet all that went to naught. They were there. On time. They were present. All the time. And they were quick! With time. Dextrous with their building (not necessary but…). Open with their creativity. And articulate with their insights.
The Workshop
The plan was to use the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Methodology to facilitate conversations around emotions in communications. The workshop centred around talking about emotions and brought in a bit of creative thinking, character building and story making. Like for every workshop, the approach was sound, but there lingered a doubt of whether we were overreaching. We were only the facilitators. Not the participants. And the conversation was in their hands. (Pun intended)
Now the build. Now the share.
We got started and then… there was no stopping us. Or them. There was quick building, spontaneous sharing, some impromptu high-fiving, laughter and yes… honest reflections. Creativity was unleashed right round the table. There was not a dull moment as each one shared a distinct and different point of view. Character building, story making, story telling. There was an element of surprise in each one of them, from each one of the participants. And in the end, as we drew to a close, there was a powerful sharing on what communication and emotions in communications could mean. (Hello… me? Time for you to start learning! Or continue doing so!)
A Sunday Done Right!
It was a Sunday of facilitating but also being drawn into refreshing viewpoints by each one of the participants.
It was a Sunday of great insights, thought-provoking reflections and much ‘serious play’.
It was a Sunday morning well spent.
Our LEGO(R) SERIOUS PLAY(R) workshop exploring emotions in interpersonal communications with a group of teenagers, revealed great insights, unleashed creativity and left us in a reflective state.
We looked inward. They looked outward. And they taught us on a Sunday morning that our future is in safe hands.
